Police in Napak district, Northern Uganda has arrested three UPDF soldiers for shooting dead a police officer at a scene of a fire accident.
The murdered police officer is detective Corporal Osema John Francis attached to Lorengecora police post in Napak district.
According to Moroto regional police, on 26/10/2021 at around 5 o’clock, they received a call reporting a motor vehicle registration number UBE 301G fuso fighter which had caught fire in Agwee village, Lorengecora along Moroto-Soroti Road.
The truck was carrying about 204 goats from Moroto to Soroti and was driven by Okurut Tom.
“A team of officers attached to Fire and rescue services were dispatched in a fire tender UP 4736 and rescued the truck, only 14 goats had died,” the police said in a statement.
“Later the information about the burnt truck reached the area OC of Lorengecora police post who decided to visit the scene with his OC CID at around 9pm using 03 bodaboda motorcycles to ensure safety of the truck.”
“They had not known that the UPDF had also deployed its personnel to guard the same truck. No sooner had they reached and parked motorcycles before checking the truck than the UPDF on guard opened rapid fire at them, killing D/CPL Osema John Francis on the spot. OC post and 03 bodaboda riders escaped un hurt.” said police
Police responded and arrested three UPDF soldiers who opened fire, and detained them at Napak Police.
“Investigation to the real cause of the shooting is ongoing. Our sincere condolences go to the family of D/CPL Osema John Francis, his loss has created a vacuum in our investigation department and UPF at large.,” reads part of the statement released by the regional spokesperson Mike Longole
