Hon Florence Alice Lubega, Uganda’s first elected member of parliament has died.
Hon Lubega passed away last night, just one-week shy of her 104th birthday.
The sad development was confirmed by the Deputy Speaker of Parliament Hon Anita Among.
“Hon Florence Alice Lubega as the first female legislator inspired the rest of us to take up the mantle of leadership,” Among said on Friday Morning.
“We celebrate her mentorship, inspiration and Courage that opened barriers for woman leaders. May the lord grant her eternal rest.”
Government Chief Whip Hon Thomas Tayebwa also hailed Hon Lubega for inspiring future generations of women leaders.
“You opened the gates for female legislators not only in Uganda but across the continent,” he said.
Hon Lubega joined Parliament in May 1962. She also served as Deputy Minister for Community Development and Labour.
Florence Lubega is the daughter of former Buganda Premier Samuel Wamala and Erina Nantongo.
She was married to Saulo Lubega, a former teacher at Mityana secondary school.
Hon Lubega outlived all her children.
