Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) is set to resume play after suspension for almost two years due to the COVID 19 pandemic that saw all chess activities being put at a standstill.
The Uganda Chess League marks the official resumption of Over the Board (OTB) Chess and has received a boost of 60 million from Premier Bet.
The Sponsorship package consists of 30 million cash and 30 million in kind (branding and advertising). This turns out as a record sponsorship deal in Uganda’s Chess league following the 50 million sponsorship package by the same firm in 2019.
UCF was formed in 1972 and is set celebrate 50 years of chess next year. The last five years have seen massive sponsorship in Ugandan chess thanks to the able leadership of UCF president Eng. Mwaka Emmanuel and his Executive committee.
The league is set to kick off at the beautiful Gloria Gardens in Namugongo in Wakiso district on the 24th October, 2021 and by presstime, UCf was finalizing preparations and securing the necessary clearances to ensure the safe resumption of the noble game.
The last national league attracted 43 teams including Western express from Kenya and Mogadishu Chess Club from Somalia. The defending Champions Kireka panthers are set to face stiff challenges from Kireka A, Mulago Kings , Makerere and Chess Dynasty chess clubs.
University Chess Clubs were the massively hit by the Lockdown but arrangements to reopen institutions on 1st November 2021 could ease the situation.
Inter-club transfers are underway and other foreign clubs from Kenya, South Sudan and Rwanda have expressed interest to play in the prestigious 2021 Uganda Chess league.
The Federation is set on sustainability projects and will be announcing new projects, partners and sponsors soon according to the FIDE Executive Committee member Eng. Mwaka.
The league currently markets the country well and Mwaka encouraged “all participants to adhere to the set conditions by the Ministry of Health as the chess game sores to greater heights.”
