Mbale, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Mbale city councillors have tasked the city taskforce to account for the Covid-19 funds.
The Ministry of Health released 365 Million Shillings to the district to help in the fight against the pandemic. The money was meant to pay village health teams, facilitate inland travels of district taskforce officials, and pay allowances for the taskforce officials and vehicle maintenance among others.
On Wednesday during a special siting, the councillors asked members of the taskforce to explain how the money was spent. The councillors argued that they had registered several complaints of people who did not receive the money.
Rebecca Newumbe, a female councillor representing workers told the council that the public is demanding the accountability of the money, but have no answers on how the funds were utilized.
She also said that some medical workers did not receive their money.
Isaac Waniala, a councilor representing Industrial city Division West said that some councillors did not receive funds for mobilization and sensitization of the community.
Ismael Mukankadi, the male worker’s representative at the city questioned what the money was used for. He adds that the budget had been inflated, noting that hiring a public address system was allocated 20 Million Shillings.
The Secretary of Health, Education and Social Services Flavia Lunyolo said that part of the money that was disbursed to the city is yet to be spent. He said that a detailed accountability report is being prepared and will soon be tabled in council.
The Deputy Town Clerk, Keneth Khatuli Woniaye said that the councillors should wait for the report before they debate the matter.
