Top commander of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) Sham Sofi was killed in an encounter with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Tral area, police said on Wednesday.
A senior police officer told India Today TV that the top JeM commander was killed after he engaged in a gunfight with security forces.
Inspector General of Police (Kashmir) Vijay Kumar said the slain terrorist was later identified as Sham Sofi.
“Top JeM Commander Sham Sofi killed in Tral encounter,” the IGP said on Kashmir Zone Police’s Twitter handle.

Earlier today, a joint team of J&K Police, Army and the CRPF launched a cordon and search operation after receiving specific inputs about the presence of terrorists in the Tral area of Awantipora in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
An encounter broke out after the militants opened fire at the security personnel, who retaliated. In the exchange of fire, a militant was killed.
In two back-to-back encounters, five terrorists, including the one involved in the recent killing of a street hawker, were gunned down in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district on Tuesday.
The first encounter broke out on Monday night in Tulran village of Shopian district after terrorists opened fire at a search party.
“Out of three killed terrorists, one terrorist has been identified as Mukhtar Shah of Ganderbal, who shifted to Shopian after killing one street hawker Virendra Paswan of Bihar,” IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar was quoted as saying by Kashmir Zone Police.
The other two terrorists were later identified as Danish Ahmad of Rai Kapran and Yawar Ahmad of Pehlipora Shopian.
The second encounter broke out in Shopian’s Feri Pora area where security forces gunned down two more terrorists after they opened fire on a search party.
