Two police officers, Inspector JN Singh and sub-inspector Akshay Mishra, were arrested on Sunday in connection with the death case of Kanpur businessman Manish Gupta.
The two police officials had reward of one lakh each on their head.
Gorakhpur Police arrested the two policemen and handed them over to Kanpur SIT, which is probing the death case of Manish Gupta.
WHAT IS THE CASE?
The name of Manish Gupta, a Kanpur-based property dealer, made headlines after media reports claimed that he died after allegedly being assaulted by policemen in Gorakhpur. Gupta was staying along with two friends in the hotel when the alleged incident happened.
According to the police, they had information on “suspicious” men living at the hotel and they had entered the hotel room where Manish Gupta was staying with his two friends to check their identities.
The Gorakhpur Police further claimed that while they were questioning the three men, Manish Gupta fell on the group as he was drunk and suffered a head injury.
He was taken to the BRD Medical College where he died during treatment, police claimed.
However, the victim’s family members alleged that Manish Gupta died after the policemen attacked him. Manish Gupta’s wife Meenakshi also accused the police and hotel staff of covering-up.
Following the incident, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of UP’s Kanpur Police was tasked with carrying out an investigation in the case.
Earlier this week, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of the SIT team had announced a reward of Rs 25,000 each for information on six absconding policemen who are accused in Manish Gupta’s death case.
