Gandhi Jayanti is also marked as the International Day of Non-Violence on account of the non-violent strategy adopted by Mahatma Gandhi to help India secure independence from the British rule in 1947.
On the occasion, United Nations secretary-general Antonio Guterres stressed the need to “usher in a new era of peace and tolerance” on the ‘International Day of Non-Violence’ and urged countries to pay heed to Gandhiji’s message of peace.
Hatred, division and conflict have had their day.
It is time to usher in a new era of peace, trust and tolerance.
On this International Day of Non-Violence – Gandhi’s birthday – let’s heed his message of peace, and commit to building a better future for all.
