Uganda’s senior Women national football team (Crested Cranes) has been knocked out of the ongoing COSAFA championship after a slim 1-0 defeat to Zambia in the final group C game at Nelson Mandela Bay stadium on Tuesday.
Skipper Grace Chanda’s strike after 37th minutes guided Zambia to the semi-finals of the competition, sending the Crested Cranes home packing.
George Lutalo’s side bows out with four points after three group stage games. The Crested Cranes kicked off the campaign with a goalless draw against Namibia before walloping Eswatini 5-1 in the second fixture. A win was all that the East African giants needed to storm the last four stage.
Zambia progressed to the semi-finals as group C leaders with maximum points (9), five better of second placed Uganda while Namibia and Eswatini followed in that order.
Zambia now joins South Africa and Tanzania who automatically progressed to the semis from groups A and B respectively to storm the semi finals while Malawi completes the puzzle as the best second placed team.
Malawi accumulated six points from their group A that also had defending champions South Africa.
The Crested Cranes will now embark on their upcoming 2022 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations Qualifiers, playing Ethiopia in the first round phase.
