Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday slammed the Congress and said the party, in order to practise appeasement politics, had allowed highways to be closed for namaz. He was speaking at an event in Uttarakhand, which will go for elections in February 2022.

“Earlier, when I came here during the Congress government, some people told me that the government had permitted the highways for namaz on Fridays. Congress does only appeasement and can’t do any welfare work for the people of Uttarakhand,” Amit Shah said.

Amit Shah trained his guns on Congress leader and former Chief Minister Harish Rawat and accused him of encouraging appeasement politics. “Congress even declared a holiday to offer namaz,” Shah claimed.

He was speaking at the inauguration event of ‘Chief Minister’s Ghasiyari Kalyan Yojana’ in Dehradun. The initiative aims to free women in the hills from the compulsion of traversing long distances to fetch fodder for their livestock.

Amit Shah also accused Harish Rawat of “playing with the lives of people by selling spurious liquor”.

“I challenge Harish Rawatji to an open debate on the promises made and fulfilled by Congress and BJP in their respective election manifestos. The BJP has fulfilled around 85% of promises made in its manifesto,” he added.

He sought Congress’s list of development works while claiming that the BJP government had completed initiatives worth Rs 85,000 crore. He also alleged that Congress leaders were nowhere to be seen during the peak Covid period.

Amit Shah said Uttarakhand has developed on all fronts under BJP rule and sought another mandate for the party to bring prosperity to every home under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.

Modi’s vision for the reconstruction of Kedarnath, which had suffered extensive damage in the 2013 disaster, led to the never-seen-before development in and around the temple, he said.

The prime minister will unveil a statue of Adi Guru Shankaracharya in Kedarnath during his visit to the temple on November 5.

On the arrival of Home Minister Amit Shah, MLA Kunwar Pranav Singh from Khanpur, Haridwar, reportedly left the programme after failing to get a place on the stage. Earlier, at the Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun, Cabinet minister Rekha Arya had also reportedly huffed off in anger after finding her name missing from the ‘welcome list’.
