A Class 8 girl was stabbed multiple times on a street by a man in the Bibwewadi area of Pune when she was on her way to Kabaddi practice, police said on Tuesday.
The victim has been identified as 14-year-old Kshitija, who was rushed to hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
“Kshitija was on her way to practice Kabaddi in the evening at Yash Lawns in the Bibewadi area around 5.45 pm when her relative Hrishikesh alias Shubham Bhagwat (22) came on his friend’s motorcycle and brutally attacked the girl with a sharp weapon. She was stabbed multiple times and the attack was so brutal that the girl died on the spot”, Namrata Patil, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Maharashtra, said.
She further added that Kshitija’s friends were also present at the crime spot, who were threatened by the accused and asked to leave.
“Later, he also fled the spot,” Patil said.
Prima facie, a “one-sided” love affair by a distant relative of the girl might have led to the brutal murder, an official said.
Police also recovered a gun at the crime scene and have launched a manhunt to nab the accused.
