Dutch Ambassador to Uganda Karin Boven and Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga

Mengo, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Buganda Kingdom and the Kingdom of Netherlands have discussed means of strengthening their cooperation in boosting agriculture in the country.

On Friday, the Dutch Ambassador to Uganda Karin Boven and Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga discussed how to further the Netherland’s support of the Kingdom’s agriculture projects.

Ambassador Karin Boven has expressed an eagerness to join hands with Buganda to promote agriculture as a business. She said that they are ready to support female entrepreneurs and farmers. She says her nation will work with the Buganda kingdom on various projects that the two entities have agreed on.

According to Mayiga, the Kingdom and the Dutch will work together on the coffee-growing project known as mwanyi terimba, animal husbandry, communal cleaning bulungibwansi, planting trees to conserve the environment.

Mayiga has urged people to take care of the environment because agriculture can only thrive if the environment is well taken care of. He says the environment and agriculture walk hand in hand.

The meeting is part of the Netherland’s effort to promote agriculture in Uganda. The Netherlands government has made various interventions in agriculture such as the Integrated Seed Sector Development plus (ISSD Plus) launched in 2017.

ISSD targets access and production of high-quality seeds through research in partnership with the National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO). Another is the Resilient Efficient Agribusiness Chains (REACH Uganda) project under the international fertilizer Development Center whose aim is to impact up to 350,000 households.
