• Uganda 1-0 Rwanda
Fahad Bayo was the hero again as Uganda Cranes edged past rivals and neighbors Rwanda Amavubi Stars 1-0 in the return leg of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers at the St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende on Sunday.
Bayo who scored Uganda’s priceless goal in Kigali on Thursday nodded home a swift corner-kick laid by Isaac Muleme for the Cranes to go second on eight points in group E.
Michó Milutin Sredojevic’s side looked more conservative and barely created any significant scoring chances in both stanzas besides the game’s defining moment after 22 minutes.
Striker Yunus Sentamu came from bench to miss two fantastic opportunities. He curled a brilliant free-kick just inches wide before putting Ibrahim Oriti’s cut-back wide.
After conceeding, Rwanda dominated proceedings but will take the blame for being wasteful in the final third. Jacques Tuyisenge failed to meet a neat cross from right back Denis Rukundo.
Cranes custodian Charles Lukwago denied Kevin Muhire, Ange Mutsinze header bounced over the woodwork while Blaise Nishimwe shot wide after Uganda’s poor clearance.
The defeat eroded away Rwanda’s ambitions for advancing to the World Cup through the African Qualifiers. They sit rock bottom with just one point after four games.
With two points shy of pacesetters Mali (Eight), Uganda Cranes will have to win their last two games to qualify for the last round of qualifiers.
