Police in Aswa region have warned members of the public to desist from swimming in rivers and streams as the water levels have greatly increased
Police say they have recorded about 5 cases of deaths by drowning in the last one week, especially children who go swimming, as well as drunkards and the elderly trying to cross those water bodies.
The latest case of drowning involved a 12-year-old boy identified as Onen Isaac Mugisa, a resident of Labworomor Parish, Palaro sub-county in Gulu district
The boy is said to have gone swimming with four other juveniles in River Aswa, and he drowned while his friends managed to escape.
“We are warning the Parents who leave their Children unattended to play and swim in the waters that they risk being charged with negligence,” said David Mudong Ongom, the Aswa regional Police spokesperson,
Police is also appealing to local leaders and CSOs sensitize the masses against the risk of swimming in flooded rivers and streams
