Actor Leena Maria Paul, who appeared in the film ‘Madras Café’, helped her husband Sukesh Chandrasekhar launder extorted money, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has alleged.
Sukesh Chandrasekhar has been accused of extorting Rs 200 crore from a Delhi-based businessman’s wife while he was in jail. The investigating agency claims to have found evidence to suggest that his wife Leena Maria Paul was actively involved in diverting and routing the illegally extorted money through a Chennai-based firm.
The ED has also found that Leena Maria Paul invited Bollywood actor and dancer Nora Fatehi to an event where Sukesh Chandrasekhar purportedly gifted her expensive items worth over a crore.
LEENA PAUL’S FIRM
According to the ED, Leena Maria Paul’s firm Nail Artistry did business, on paper, to the tune of Rs 4.79 crore in Chennai and Rs 1.21 crore in Kochi in the financial year 2020-21. However, it is suspected that this amount was nothing but proceeds of crime which were placed and layered by her.
The ED has also recovered three mobile phones from Leena Paul. As per sources, she is being confronted with data recovered from her phone during her custody.
“The accused has not only enjoyed the proceeds of crime but is also actively involved in laundering the same in active connivance with main accused Sukesh Chandrasekhar. The accused has been actively involved in helping her husband Sukesh Chandrasekhar keep in touch with Arun Muthu for cash transactions. She is deliberately withholding information regarding the utilisation of proceeds of crime and is making statements contrary to the evidence so far collected,” said an ED officer.
The financial probe agency believes that Leena Maria Paul alias Leena Paulose was not merely
a beneficiary of the proceeds of crime but played an active role in movement of the proceeds of crime and its projection as untended money.
The ED has also claimed to have found evidence that money was moved on Leena Paul’s instructions. The investigators are questioning her about the trail of money which Sukesh Chandrasekhar extorted while he was lodged in jail.
