Delhi Capitals on Thursday put an end to speculation over their captaincy role for the remainder of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021, starting September 19. The former runners-up confirmed that Rishabh Pant will lead the franchise in the UAE.
“JSW-GMR co-owned Delhi Capitals today announced that Rishabh Pant will continue as Captain for the remainder of the #IPL2021 season,” Delhi Capitals said in a statement.
Speculation was rife as Shreyas Iyer, their former captain, returned from a shoulder injury to join the Delhi Capitals camp in the UAE. Wicketkeeper-batsman Pant was appointed as captain before the start of the IPL 2021 season in April after Iyer suffered the shoulder injury during a limited-overs series against England earlier this year.
Delhi Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal on Thursday took to social media to congratulate Rishabh Pant and said the skipper and former skipper Shreyas Iyer will work together to help the team reach the play-offs for the second successive time.
“Super excited for the remainder of season – very happy to have @ShreyasIyer15 back in the squad and fully fit – have no doubt that Rishabh and him together will continue the fantastic work done in the first half of the season – let’s bring home the title,” Jindal said.

Delhi Capitals had entrusted Rishabh Pant with captaincy after the wicketkeeper-batsman had a dream run in international in the lead up to IPL 2021. Pant, who was struggling to find a place in the Indian squad, played a heroic knock in Brisbane to help India register a famous Test series win in Australia earlier this year.
He had continued the rich vein of form against England at home before replacing Iyer as the captain of the Delhi Capitals.
Notably, Iyer had led Delhi Capitals to the final of IPL 2020 in the UAE. The senior batsman underwent surgery and was out of action as he recovered in time for the resumption of IPL. Iyer is part of the stand-by group of players for India’s T20 World Cup campaign.
Earlier in the day, Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting had said Iyer’s return only strengthens the Capitals who are already on top of the points table with 6 wins from 8 matches.
“It’s great to have Shreyas back. He has got an infectious attitude. I have been talking to him a lot and his training has been great,” said Ricky Ponting.
“He’s so keen to get back into the field, score runs and win. He’s a world-class player and he’s going to add a lot to our team, there’s no doubt about that,” he added.
