Everything Venkatesh Iyer is touching is turning into gold in the UAE leg of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. The 26-year-old all-rounder did not feature for Kolkata Knight Riders in the first half of the season in India but he has made headlines with his performances in the UAE.
After taking opposition bowlers to the cleaners with his impressive effort with the bat in the UAE, Venkatesh Iyer delivered with the ball for Kolkata Knight Riders in their crunch game against last year’s finalists Delhi Capitals. Bowling medium-pace, Iyer gave away just 29 runs and picked up 2 crucial wickets, that of Shimron Hetmyer and Axar Patel as DC were restricted to 127/9 in 20 overs on a slow pitch in Sharjah on Tuesday.
Venkatesh Iyer nailed his Yorkers as Delhi batsmen found it difficult to hit boundaries against the medium-pacer. Eoin Morgan gave Iyer all 4 overs and the opening batter responded by delivering them with precision and intensity.
KKR did not feel the absence of Andre Russell with the ball as Iyer chipped in with the ball well after KKR decided to rest Russell who seemed to pick up an injury in their previous game.
Do practice the Yorkers a lot: Iyer
“Felt good with the ball. Always had the confidence that I can deliver with the ball. I do practice the yorker a lot. I practice with my bowling coach Anand Rajan. For me, it’s about accuracy and bowling to my field. As long as my execution is current, I am extremely satisfied,” Venkatesh Iyer said.
Iyer struggled for timing with the bat but chipped in with 14 runs. Sunil Narine’s all-round effort and couple of 30s from Shubman Gill and Nitish Rana helped KKR beat DC by 3 wickets. KKR retained their 4th spot on the points table after gunning down the target in just 18.2 overs.
Iyer has already scored 126 runs in 4 matches at a strike rate of over 140 for KKR in IPL 2021, giving Eoin Morgan’s side the much-needed aggressive intent at the top. With his bowling coming good, the former champions have a great prospect in hand.
“I think to be a player who can help in all three departments is good. I thrive fielding as well. I’ve always wanted to be that cricketer,” Iyer said.
