Mahant Narendra Giri Maharaj was apparently “tired” of his disciple Anand Giri’s actions, audio tapes of his alleged conversation with another seer, exclusively accessed by India Today, reveal.
Anand Giri, the main accused in Mahant Narendra Giri’s death case, allegedly misused his power and tried to get control of a Brahmachari Kuti in Uttar Pradesh’s Noida by claiming to be the first Mahant, a conversation with the Kuti’s chief has disclosed.
India Today could not independently verify the content of the audio tapes.
Swami Om Bharti is the Mahant of the Brahmachari Kuti located in Noida’s Sector 82. In an exclusive conversation with India Today, Swami claimed that Anand Giri tried to take over the Kuti and become its head during the lockdown last year, to get hold of the land that spans over 12 bighas.
He also alleged that he tried to file a police case against Anand Giri but could not because of the accused’s apparent power.
Swami Om Bharti said he then contacted Mahant Narendra Giri, after which Anand Giri was forced to give up his claim on the Brahmachari Kuti.
In his conversation with the now deceased Mahant Narendra Giri, Swami Bharti apprises him of Anand Giri’s power politics, an audio tape reveals.
During the conversation, Mahant Narendra Giri himself says he was tired of Anand Giri’s politics. He also went on to say that despite him intervening several times, such incidents kept happening.
“I will speak to him,” Mahant Narendra Giri tells Swami Bharti repeatedly during the conversation as he complains about how he may be thrown on the street if Anand Giri takes over the Kuti. He also claims that his disciples’ phones were snatched.
According to Swami Om Bharti, despite complaining to higher authorities, he couldn’t get respite and an official program was organised where Anand Giri was christened as the Mahant in June 2020.
India Today is in possession of audio tapes allegedly showing Anand Giri misusing Mahant Narendra Giri’s name to get backing from the higher ups. In another audio tape, the head of the village can also be heard giving threatening consequences if Swami Om Bharti doesn’t acknowledge Anand Giri as the head.
Mahant Narendra Giri, the president of the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad, was found dead in his room at the Baghambari Math in Prayagraj on Monday evening.
According to the police, a handwritten suicide letter in which he wrote his will and the names of several people who had been allegedly troubling him was recovered from the room. One of the names was that of his disciple, Anand Giri.
Anand Giri has now been arrested and a special investigation team has been formed to probe the case.
The accused has maintained that it is all a ‘huge conspiracy’ against him and that Narendra Giri was “tortured over money” and murdered. The guru and his protégé had allegedly fallen out over financial mismanagement and fraud in May this year. He was also reportedly expelled by the seer over the accusations.
UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, a priest himself, has said “several pieces of evidence” had been collected in the seer’s death case and the “culprit will not be spared”.
Mahant Narendra Giri was a well revered and influential seer and many politicians visited him often.
