The Kolkata Police has lodged an FIR and arrested 8 people over the alleged attack on Bengal BJP leader Dilip Ghosh during his campaign in Bhabanipur on Monday ahead of the bypoll.
Police have so far arrested 8 people after registering a case under various IPC sections. The identities of those arrested are yet to be revealed by the police.
Several sections of the Indian Penal Code relating to unlawful assembly, rioting with arms and weapons, voluntarily causing hurt and criminal intimidation have been invoked in the FIR filed at Bhawanipore police station.
On Monday, during the last day of campaigning for the Bhabanipur bypoll, Dilip Ghosh was seen on camera being pushed and heckled by alleged TMC supporters who raised slogans and protested at the venue.
The protests and jostling prompted Dilip Ghosh’s security officers to whip out pistols as the political temperatures soared on the last day of campaigning.
TV channels showed Dilip Ghosh being pushed and heckled on a road as a posse of security guards tried to shield him. A suspected TMC supporter was seen grabbing a security man by his collar who swiftly pulled out a pistol to scare away the crowd.
On Tuesday, a BJP delegation in New Delhi met the Election Commission officials to urged the EC to impose Section 144 on September 30 along with deployment of central forces for the bypoll.
Union ministers Bhupender Yadav, Anurag Thakur and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi were among the members of the delegation that met the EC.
