DODOMA, Tanzania – President John Pombe Magufuli has accepted the official certification of his victory in Tanzania’s election last week.
Magufuli was declared winner with 84% after accumulating 12.5 million votes, and is to be sworn into his second term on Thursday. In a Sunday statement , Magufuli admitted that there were some challenges in the election but also said, it was generally peaceful.
President magufuli however announced that he will not seek another term in office, “This is my second and last term in office.” he said.
This is very significant, because his ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi, has won nearly every seat in parliament, giving it the power to change the country’s constitution to allow Magafuli to run for additional terms. Some party officials have already spoken publicly about taking measures to allow Magafuli to extend his time in power beyond two five-year terms.
